Dear Athletic Directors, Coaches, Guidance Counselors, Parents:


The Hillsborough Chapter of UNICO National is pleased to announce we are accepting applications for the Brian Piccolo Award for 2020. UNICO is the largest Italian-American service organization in the United States. We encourage you to visit our National website at www.unico.org . The award is given annually throughout the country to high school student athletes of Italian-American heritage who exhibit the qualities modeled by Brian Piccolo in his life and career (courage, friendship, loyalty, teamwork, dedication, sense of humor and anti-bias). We are offering a scholarship as an incentive for young Italian-American student athletes who aspire to greater achievements by pursuing higher education.


The criteria for our scholarship are as follows:

• Graduating high school student athlete

• At least one parent/grandparent of Italian heritage

• Athletic Achievement

• Academic Achievement

• Community Service


The student who successfully receives this award will also be given an engraved plaque and a $1,000.00 scholarship from the Hillsborough Chapter of UNICO.


The Scholarship Recognition Brunch will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2020, 10:00AM-1:00PM at the Gran Centurions Hall, 440 Madison Hill Road, Clark NJ 07066. Attendance to the event will be required by the student and at least one parent or guardian.


Please encourage your graduating student athletes, who qualify, to apply for our scholarship. Completed applications must be returned no later than February 29, 2020.  Applications are available for download below.

Brian Piccolo was just 26 years old when he died of an aggressive form of cancer.  He played professional football for the Chicago Bears for four years.  His short life, career, and friendship with teammate Gale Sayers was the subject of a 1971 made-for-television movie, "Brian’s Song."
